Venus Williams, 45, Receives Wild Card for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
Statistical Highlights
Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Setting a New Record
Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
Latest Personal Milestone
In the final days of December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
