We are checking images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
