When an 18-year-old creates club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
