During the bulk of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
