The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
