The pace bowler increased the injury concerns plaguing England after leaving the playing area during Saturday's play in the Melbourne Test in the Ashes series.

The pace bowler felt a problem in his hamstring after the final ball that he bowled at the MCG.

The touring camp indicated the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and required time off the field for further assessment "in the coming hours".

The final Test of the series beginning on 4 January begins on Sunday, 4 January.

The English side has been without fast bowlers one seamer with a knee problem and Jofra Archer because of a side injury on the current trip.

Matthew Fisher was added to the party as injury reinforcement.

His form was underwhelming during the first two matches, managing only a handful of scalps.

He was dropped of the third Test, then recalled for the fourth Test to fill the void.

Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, bagging two scalps in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 while batting being one of only three England players who passed ten runs.

Following a brief spell at the end of day one, he returned for the second day's play and removed Scott Boland edging to the keeper.

Unfortunately, towards the conclusion of his spell, he sent down a variation to Travis Head and promptly felt his left hamstring.

Gus Atkinson was recalled for the Melbourne match following his omission the Adelaide game.
