Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
An Unexpected Return for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
