Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He fought the legal system and the legal system won.

Sixty days subsequent to being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro now appears headed to prison.

Imminent Imprisonment

The adjudicated plotter – who's been under home confinement in his residence while a series of judicial steps and petitions play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, during growing talk that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security facility.

Historical Comments on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the conservative former paratrooper displayed little compassion for the country's inmates.

“What’s the need to provide those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Facility Speculation

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, a group of four this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to dissuade the judiciary from banishing him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the standard of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “That is almost one square metre per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they complain, of course, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Supporters React

The senator isn't the lone figure expressing views prior to the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Penning in a major newspaper, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the biggest political injustice in its record”.

“It is an wrong that erodes the spirits of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Response

It is possibly true considering the significant support Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. However his expected incarceration has also gladdened the feelings of many other people who think he ought to be jailed for plotting to stop the incoming president from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the incumbent administration's political party, commented: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to get proper care – but dignified handling in prison. He can’t continue being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time celebrating the tough handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – chosen to tour a penitentiary to find out what situations are truly like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning handling”.

Potential Incarceration Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of detainees, his expected location seems to be a adjacent prison for police officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the area of vehicle spaces – and contains a 130 square foot WC with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and even a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report suggested.

Ideological Reactions

He criticized the speculated proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
