Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to Expire for 41 Million Amid Prolonged US Government Shutdown
USDA officials stated recently that SNAP funds from a major federal support systems are not going out during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.
Impasse Persists Through Its Third Week
The funding lapse had reached nearly a month when the announcement was made, coming after calls from over 200 House Democrats asking the department to utilize reserve accounts to cover next month's benefits.
“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “Now, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.
Millions Affected
Over 40 million Americans depend on the regular assistance, as reported by the USDA. In certain states, like one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance is as high as 21% of residents.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that USDA officials would not access emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.
Legislative Deadlock
Republicans and Democrats are still at odds about the way to finance and restart the federal government.
Remarks from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that the administration had opportunities to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.
“It could have, and should have acted before now to get ready to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Conversely, they might decide against it to secure political leverage” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to approve legislation that would resume federal functions.
States Prepare
State leaders from Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols this week to free up resources to combat potential hunger expecting food benefits expiring next month.
