Line of Duty Confirmed for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
