Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
