Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new initialism surfaced several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are ongoing. Officials has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
