Condemnation Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism

Figures from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

“What a appalling and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health within families.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
